List of software/hardware that Vista doesnt like!

I was thinking it would be useful if people have issues with certain software or hardware issues they could post

     Version of Vista

    Hardware/Software

    Solution if there is one

I think it would be really helpful especially to people looking to make the switch like myself but im waiting to win my free copy ;)

    Hi Slayerx,

In my months of testing Vista and now with Home premium I have had two incidents of Vista hating my programs - or rather the programs hating Vista.

Blue Soleil bluetooth software - causes a blue screen loop

Sony Ericsson PC Suite - simply will not install.  I emailed Sony and they say they have no plans for a Vista version in the immediate future.

I will also add that I could not register my Adobe Photoshop Album, however this was resolved by running the registration by right click run as admin.

That is all.  Everything else runs fine.  Although I have to admit, I really never have much on my computer anyway so I have not done extensive individual software testing.

I never really used the Sony software anyway.

If on the rare occasion I take photos with the phone I have found a workaround though, send by bluetooth to PDA and then sync PDA.  Haven't worked out how to backup contacts yet though.  I am not really a phone gadget person though so I don't look too deep into these things.  :)

Vista seems to run all modern games OK even if you have to run in compatibility mode which is no hardship. Paintshop Pro 7.0 & 10.0 work OK (& probably in between too but cant vouch for that).

Vista has difficulty with utility programs. Partition magic 7.0 & 8.0 dont work. Powerdesk 5.0 & 6.0 dont work. Easy CD creator version 9.0 works but not earlier editions. Likewise Nero 7.0 works with Vista but not earlier editions.

Shame about Partition magic 7.0 & 8.0 are there any good alternatives that work?

Re: List of software/hardware that Vista doesnt like!

I have Home Premium (OEM) and have a couple of issues.

GeForce FX5900 - nVidia does not support anything below 6series cards in their drivers for Vista. The reason for this is beyond me as in my opinion the 5900 is a card which can hold its own pretty well and handles most games on the market. Probably something to do with the pixel shader being too old or something trivial like that.

Solutions: Get a newer card or wait and hope for better support

Samsung SyncMaster 940BW - A widescreen monitor with a native resolution of 1440x900. This resolution is not supported in either the standard drivers or the older nVidia Vista drivers which does support the 5series. Pretty irritating as a TFT not running in its native resolution displays a rather poor and blurry image.

Solutions: Wait for a Vista driver for the monitor?

CMI-9761A Onboard AC97 Audio - Took me 2 hours to get sound after installing Vista. Windows wanted to use Realtek drivers, CMedia drivers did not recognise the chip and XP drivers for it wouldn't recognise Vista as a Windows OS. In the end I found some Acer drivers which worked.

Solutions: For me, downloading and installing the Acer drivers.

This software is useless!! So is the nokia software. I don't bother with these pieces...i just insert the cable and use to download/upload my photos and music that way

Re: List of software/hardware that Vista doesnt like!

Bejeweled 2 is the only program I have that will not run at all.  MusicMatch says it has compatibility issues but when I choose to run it does OK for now.  HP is slow at getting custom Print drivers up and running.  With 5 HP Printers and 3 of them less than a year old all have beta drivers.  All in all I would say that is good as I have just under a Terabyte of apps and games.   XP was so flawless that I hesitated to go with Vista. So far it is living up to it's predecessor

Well, Realtek Speaker Systems don't work with Vista, but you can downlaod updated drivers I believe!

    WRT graphics cards:

Version 96.85 supports some pre 6 series cards and it is WHQL certified. I am using FX5750 with 96.85 on Vista Business.

Re: List of software/hardware that Vista doesnt like!

My Curiel PC card with Verizon Wireless, got me my first and only BSOD so far.  Vista also didn't particularly care for the connection software either.

Verizon was kind and allowed me to reduce the PC card to another line on our Family Plan.  They'll leave it as a dummy phone or you can opt to get another phone.
